The Beasain Town Council virtual assistant

Beasain Town Council serves its residents with Loinatz, a virtual assistant developed by Lagunbot IA that answers in Basque and Spanish, at any time, using the council's information.

What Beasain Town Council needed

Like other town councils in the Basque Country, Beasain needed to provide accurate council information at any time, in Basque and in Spanish, without putting more pressure on staff. The difficulty is that this information changes often: opening hours, procedures, events in the calendar. An answer that was right last month may not be right today.

What we did

We developed Loinatz, the council's virtual assistant. It handles council information 24 hours a day and answers about procedures, services and the council's events calendar.

The key piece is its knowledge base. It can be updated when council information changes, without touching the rest of the assistant, so that residents always get current information.

Loinatz answers on the council website, in Basque and in Spanish.

How it was built

We followed the same process as in the rest of our projects, which we describe in how we work:

  1. An assessment with the council to decide what the assistant should answer.
  2. Preparing the knowledge base with the council's information.
  3. Testing in Basque and in Spanish before opening it to the public.
  4. Launch and follow-up: we review what people ask and adjust the content.

In which languages

In Basque and in Spanish. The assistant was designed to answer well in Basque from the start, not as a translation from Spanish, and it was tested in both languages before it was published.

What we learned

  • Keeping the information up to date matters as much as building the assistant. A council events calendar changes every month, and the assistant has to change with it.
  • Testing in Basque from day one avoids surprises at launch.
  • People's enquiries show which information needs more visibility on the council website.
